The Tanzania Institute of Education (TIE) is a public institution operating under the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. Its main responsibility is to interpret national education policies and translate them into curricula, teaching programs, and learning materials aimed at improving the quality of education across all levels, including pre-primary, primary, secondary, and teacher training colleges.

TIE was originally established under Act No. 13 of 1963 as the Institute of Education, functioning as a unit within the University of Dar es Salaam. Its early role focused on coordinating teacher training and supporting the Ministry’s efforts to enhance teaching and learning in schools.

In 1970, when the University of Dar es Salaam became independent, the Institute continued operating within the university until 1975, when it was transferred to the Ministry of Education and Culture as an independent institution under Act No. 13 of 1975.

Later developments include:

• 1987: Renamed to the Institute of Curriculum Development to reflect its growing role in curriculum design
• 1993: Renamed to Tanzania Institute of Education (TIE) under Act No. 5
• 2009: Recognized as a non-university higher education institution under the National Council for Technical Education, focusing on training in curriculum development and innovation
